I wanted to try something simple yet different with prawn. I tried making a varuval with the simplest ingredients in my kitchen and it came out delectable. Here’s how I made…
Ingredients
1 medium sized onion, 1 medium sized tomato
½ ts mustard seed
Few curry leaves
½ ts garam masala
2 ts lemon juice
To marinate
250 g prawn
1 ts ginger garlic paste
1 ts coriander powder, 1 ts cumin powder, ¾ ts chilli powder, ¼ ts turmeric powder
2 ts thick curd
Pre-step
Mix the prawn with the ingredients given under marination and marinate it for a minimum of half an hour
Preparation
Take a flat and wide bottomed pan. Add oil. Add mustard. Fry the onions until they turn slightly brown. Add the curry leaves. Add tomato and keep cooking it until the tomato is well mashed up and oil oozes out. Add garam masala. Next add the marinated prawn and mix it well with the tomato paste until everything gets incorporated well. Add water if needed. Cover the pan and keep in low to medium flame. Let it cook slowly until the mixture is completely dry. If the gravy tends to stick to the pan, sprinkle water as and when needed. Finally squeeze out the lemon juice.
Notes:
For a good outcome of this dish, key points to be noted….1. Wait for tomato to get cooked well and until oil ooze out. 2. After mixing the marinated prawn, keep the pan in medium flame and let it cook slowly, until the masala is well cooked and the mixture becomes completely dry.
Patience is the key to good cooking!
