This is a typical Sourashtrain dish. We in home prepare this atleast once in a week as an accompaniment to rice. Its mildly flavoured and very good for health. You can make this char with arai keerai, melagu thakkali keerai, agathi keerai or a combination of some of these. But murungai keerai is not generally used. Since I don't get any of these greens in my place, I use spinach which is widely available.
Ingredients
1 bunch of greens of your choice (arai keerai/ melagu thakkali keerai, agathi keerai/ spinach)
2 ts tuvar dal
1 cup milk
To grind
To grind
3/4 ts peppercorn
1 ts jeera
1/2 ts white poppy seed/ kasa kasa
3-4 ts grated coconut
1 medium sized onion finely chopped
Preparation
Grind the ingredients listed above into a smooth paste with very little water.
In a pressure cooker add the chopped greens and tuvar dal with 2-3 cups of water. It is traditional to use rice washed water. Allow it to give two whistles. Open the lid after the air is released. Add the ground paste and allow it to boil. Then reduce the flame to a medium and boil for around 5 minutes. Finally add a cup of milk and let it boil for a while.
And its done!
