How cooking became my passion

Unlike others, I haven’t watched very keenly to either my mom or grandmom’s cooking in my early days. But they are excellent cooks in their own ways. Being a studious girl throughout, all my young life had revolved around my studies and later around my work life. I hadn’t given a thought to cooking until I set out on my own to lead a working life. Outside food didn’t interest me much. The restaurant food is not a true reflection of what we eat at home. And hence I set out to adventure in my kitchen. When you do something so earnestly, it develops into passion. The love affair with food and cooking more so intensified after marriage. When you intend to lead a healthy wholesome life, eating good food is one, among many others which include happy family, disciplined life and proper exercise. I’ve heard my parents tell me when I was young that ‘even if you become a high achiever, your ultimate satisfaction and contentment in family comes when you make your own cooking’.

How I set to experiment in my kitchen

All in my family have same likes and dislikes. And we are not much of picky eaters. So its not much of a hassle knowing taste preferences and making dishes. But preparing the same dishes often kills the taste buds and sets in monotony to me. It soon becomes kinda boring and you begin to feel lethargic setting out to kitchen. Hence I keep it a point not to repeat dishes often.

I now feel more thrilled to collect new recipes and to replicate them in my kitchen. And the ultimate satisfaction of replicating your mom’s cooking and restaurant styled foods is enormous.

Cooking has to be mindful

Ya, I am more so thrilled now. But it really becomes taxing when you have to spend loads of time in the kitchen. I have other responsibilities to be taken care of during the day.  So in an attempt to finish my cooking soon, I just cannot dump in some vegetables and masala I see in my pantry around.

I mind my cooking. Cooking has to be mindful. So I am trying to find more ways to make cooking easy and interesting + tasty and yummy.

How this blog was born

So during these explorations, I try to find a lot of recipes around (from mom, mil, tv shows, books, blogs) and tweak to my preferences.  I usually jot them all in a word file in my lappy. One day it struck me 'why don’t I create an online space to document and showcase my cooking explorations'. This is just a humble attempt. Hope it benefits a few around.

I love to try my hands in all forms of cooking. Baking is also one bug which has caught me now. And me being a Sourashtrian, I’ll try my best to document the recipes of Sourashtrians. Sourashtrian cooking has a peculiarity of its own. Our pongal varieties, particularly Puliyodarai is one of the best. And we prepare some unique dishes which others might not know of. This blog is one humble attempt to document them all.

THIS BLOG IS NOT JUST ABOUT THE CHRONICLES OF MY EXPERIMENTS WITH FOOD AND COOKING BUT MORE ABOUT THE 'CELEBRATION OF FOOD' AND THE GOOD FEEL IT BRINGS INTO OUR LIFE.

Every channel we surf into, every magazine page we flip over has at least a few shows and articles catering to the food preferences of kids, teenagers, bachelors, married couple and the old alike. Accept it or not, we clamour for best recipes and good food. Good food makes our day.

Hats off to all fellow bloggers

I am dumbstruck and astounded by the umpteen food blogs in the blogosphere. Makes me amazed to see the huge talents of people around. You all do an amazing job. With the zillion tried and tested recipes lying around, knowledge spreading and gathering has never been so easy. Much is available at our disposal.

So, you too can become a masterchef!

Cooking is not a rocket science. Its an art. Its all in the dexterity of the hands. But through the course of my culinary journey, I’ve found that small steps matter in cooking which can make or break a recipe. So yes, cooking has to be mindful. And anyone can then make tasty, yummy and also healthier dishes.

So come join my culinary journey.
