Horsegram is one of the most protein rich lentil. It helps in reducing body weight and gives extreme energy to the body

However, Horsegram increases body heat, so traditionally its advised not to have them more than once a week. It is best to consume them in winter to maintain body temperature and improve immune system.

Its especially good for growing kids, breastfeeding moms and menstruating women.

The given recipe here is one of the best ways to include horsegram as a regular part of your menu.

Ingredients
For horsegram dal
2 tbsp horse gram
1/2 ts turmeric powder
1/2 ts hing
2 tbs sesame oil
15 small onion
3 red chillies
Few curry leaves
1/2 ts mustard seed, 1/2 ts urad dal
2 cups water

For horsegram rasam
2 ts rasam powder
1 small tomato (chopped)
1/2 cup tamarind extract
Few coriander leaves
1 small  garlic (crushed)
1 ts sesame oil
1/2 ts mustard seed, 1/2 ts urad dal
Few curry leaves
1/4 ts hing
Salt as needed
2 cups water

Preparation

- In a medium hot pan, dry roast 2 tablespoons of horsegram until it changes color and becomes aromatic
- Transfer to a mixer jar and allow to cool. Then grind them coarse just giving couple of pulses. It should have a coarse sandy texture
- Transfer the ground horsegram to the pressure cooker. Add 2 cups of water, 1/4 ts turmeric powder and 1 ts sesame oil. Pressure cook for 1 whistle in high and 2 whistles in medium flame

- While the horsegram is getting cooked, prepare the rasam ingredients, 2 ts rasam powder, 1/2 cup tamarind extract, 1 small tomato chopped, few coriander leaves and 1 small garlic crushed

- Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Add needed salt. Mix and mash well with your hands. Add the cooked horse gram water and 2 more cups of water to the rasam
- Cook the rasam in high flame

- Meanwhile, prepare the tempering for rasam with 1 ts sesame oil, 1/2 ts mustard seed , 1/2 ts urad dal and few curry leaves

- When the rasam starts boiling, add 1/4 ts hing

- Switch off flame immediately
- Add the tempering and mix well

- The rasam is done

- Now, to prepare horsegram dal, chop around 15 small onion

- Add 1 tablespoon sesame oil in a pan. Add 1/2 ts mustard seed, 1/2 ts urad dal and hing. Allow them to splutter. Next add 2 red chillies, few curry leaves and chopped onions, add turmeric powder and fry them until onion turns crisp
- Now add the cooked dal and required salt
- Mix well and cook for 2 min

- Horsegram dal is now ready

Enjoy this hearty warm rasam and dal with steamed rice and a side of any veg poriyal.
