This recipe needs no introduction among Sourashtrians. Very frequently made in most homes.
This is mildly spiced and completely oil free. The oil that oozes out from the cooked mutton gives a nice glossy touch to the dish.
Since it’s mildly spiced, many prefer to have this with spicy main dish. Most of them prefer to have this with Ambad Bhat (Tamarind rice), Kolkar (Garlic Kuzhambu) or Pilchar (Rasam).
Ingredients
200 gm diced mutton pieces
Around 10-15 small coconut pieces
1 medium sized onion
1 ts cumin seed
1 ½ ts coarsely ground pepper
3-4 red chillies
¼ ts turmeric powder
Preparation
In a pressure cooker add mutton pieces, chopped onion, cumin seed, red chillies, turmeric powder, salt and water. Cover it and pressure cook for 5-6 whistles. Mutton takes a little longer while to cook.
After the air is released add the coconut pieces to the mixture, cover it and allow one more whistle.
Open the lid after the air is released, add pepper powder and allow the mixture to simmer until all water is evaporated and the mixture becomes completely dry.
