This is a simple to make chana dal recipe prominent in almost all/ any Sourashtra feast. It tastes best with any kuzhambu varieties.
Ingredients
To pressure cook chana dal
1/2 cup chana dal
1/4 ts turmeric powder
1/4 ts hing
1 small sized onion (finely chopped)
1 ts sesame oil
Water as needed
For tempering
1 tbs sesame oil
1 ts mustard seed, 1/2 ts urad dal
Few curry leaves
2 red chilli
1 small sized onion (finely chopped)
1/4 ts pongal perungayam/ normal hing
Preparation
- Pressure cook chana dal with turmeric powder, hing, little sesame oil, chopped onions and enough water. Allow as many as 7-8 whistles. Allow the air to subside.
- Meanwhile heat oil in a small kadai and prepare the tempering adding mustard seed, urad dal, red chilli, hing and onions. Fry until the onions become crispy. Onions give enough crunch and taste to this dish.
- Now add the tempering and enough salt to the dal. Mix well and simmer for a minute.

Such a simple soul food :) This one has been missing in my kitchen for many days.. Added to must try list :)
Ya Ramya, many ( including me) sometimes forget our own simple yet soulful traditional recipes and resort to complicated new ones..so I always keep on eye on what my mom or mil does and never fail to replicate them in my kitchen...it's just a matter of keenness..
Sugirtha Veni, Thanks for the recipe. It tasted like ambrosia. I have a small suggestion to make, if the bela is soaked for about an hour and pressure cook you can avoid number of whistels to 3 - 4 and dhal texture is very good too.
Thanks Mithila for trying it out and letting know your comments...glad u liked it...
Yes, soaking dal always reduces cooking time...
