This is the very famous rice porridge of Sourashtrians. Kenni means broken rice and Paes implies porridge. This is very simple to prepare but is very healthy and tastes absolutely divine.
This is a simple and light preparation which is pleasant for the tummy. So we in home prepare this for Sunday breakfast or on the day after a heavy dinner when we wish to have something very mild. Enjoy them with any pickle or thovayal.

Ingredients
3/4 cup rice
1/4 cup urad dal
1 cup milk
1 ts salt
1/4 cup grated coconut
Preparation
- Dry roast urad dal in a kadai on a very low flame until they change color and give a very good aroma.
- Soak the rice and the roasted urad dal together in water for a minimum of 15 minutes.
- Now break the the grains of the rice by mashing and pressing them your hands. The rice should now resemble like tiny grains.
- Meanwhile add around 6 cups of water in a big stock pot and bring them to a boil. Now add the broken rice and urad dal. Lower the flame to simmer and cook covered until the rice gets cooked absorbing all the water.
- Switch off flame.
- Now add enough salt, warm milk and grated coconut. (Salt is added after cooking the rice) Mix everything well and allow the porridge to rest for a while before serving.
- The porridge may thicken over time. While serving you may add more milk to dilute it.
